Organ Donation

Did You Know … Your donated organs can help save eight (8) people?  Donate Life America reports that through tissue donation, one donor can save or enhance the lives of seventy-five (75) others. You can even donate certain organs and tissues while you’re alive and go on to live a full, healthy life. There is a national computer system and strict standards in place to ensure ethical and fair distribution of organs.

The “Waiting List”

“Waiting for a transplant is not like taking a number and waiting your turn. The waitlist is better described as a giant pool of patients. When a deceased organ donor is identified the UNOS computer system generates a ranked list of transplant candidates who are suitable to receive each organ. UNOS matches individuals waiting for a lifesaving transplant with compatible donor organs.” (Health Resources & Service Administration)

In spite of many efforts in public education there are many myths about organ and tissue donation. Here are some facts according to the United Network of Organ Sharing www.UNOS.org .

  • A national computer system and strict standards are in place to ensure ethical and fair distribution of organs.
  • People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors.
  • Organs and tissues for donation include heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, corneas, skin, tendons, bone, nerve and heart valves.
  • Share your decision to be a donor with family so they know your wishes.
  • Organ donation is consistent with the beliefs of most major religions and is considered the final act of love and generosity toward others.
  • An open casket funeral is possible.
  • There is no cost to the donor’s family or estate for organ & tissue donation.
  • If you are sick/injured and admitted to the hospital, the #1 Priority is to save your life. Organ donation can only be considered after brain death has been declared by a physician.

You can do much more than becoming a donor yourself. Talk to your family and friends. Educate them about what you know about organ donation. Share articles and websites. Together we can close the gap between the number of eligible donors and the number of people on the waiting list. These folks could be your fellow parishioners too. Thank you for your time and consideration in this very important life-giving matter.
